Old Southendian 1st XI 3 – 3 Southend 1st XI

Scorers: Peoples, Catchpole, Barclay D

MOM: Calvin, JOS: Dicko

Buoyed by the 3rd team’s impressive win over Southend’s 2s, we began the game confident of securing a second win of the day for the Old Boys. SHC started with very conservative tactics, setting a half-court press and committing few players forward. This saw us control the vast amount of early possession, and, despite playing at far from our best level, eventually took the lead when Liam converted our first short corner of the game.

At this stage we were very much in control, however to the opposition’s credit they continued to break-down our attacking options, and then upped their forward play to equalise against the run of play to draw level. Regrettably what followed after the interval was a spell of some of our worst hockey of the season, and after goals had been exchanged at either end from short corners, Tom was wrong-footed at his near post to leave us trailing 3-2.

Thankfully we finished the match and our season on a high. Having enjoyed the most of the closing stages, with Liam blasting our best chance over the bar on his reverse stick, we finally drew level with two minutes to go. Macca’s short corner strike was nimbly converted on the rebound by Dave B to send the large home crowd into raptures. Better was to follow only half a minute later, as poor defensive play from SHC saw the ball drift into Macca’s path to slot into an empty net. Unfortunately the high-tech Warners Bridge Video Referral System is still a few years away, and so we had to settle for the umpire’s conclusion that the ball appeared to clipped Timmy’s foot and a point in what was overall an under-par performance from the Old Boys.

Nonetheless, we finish the season with 16 wins, 3 draws and 51 points, around 10 points ahead of whoever eventually claims second spot. Certainly an impressive achievement to have won the league by such a margin, but there is undoubtedly work to be done and improvements to be made if we are to challenge for promotion from Div 1 next year.

Andy

And finally:

Congratulations to Liam for pipping Timmy and Fergus to finish top scorer with 19 goals.

A big thank you to Cynthia and Calvin’s Nan for having made excellent teas all season.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the 1st team this year – hopefully we can put in bigger and better performances in the league above next season.

By beating Winchmore Hill & Enfield 6-0 on Saturday, we have won the league! A first half hat-trick from Liam and further goals from Macca, Dave Catchpole and Fergus made for a comfortable win, and results then went our way elsewhere in the league.  Well done to the Ladies 2s for winning their leaguel, great causes for celebration all round.

Old Southendian 1st XI 5 – 0 Royston 1st XI

Scorers: Peoples, Catchpole x 2, O’Kill, Parker

MOM: Nick, DOD: Trunchpole

Morale was high in the camp as we boarded the Fun Tank and drove to the imposing surroundings of the Bassingbourn Barracks in Cambridgeshire. After gaining security clearance, Captain Calvin led the battle hardened souls of Old Boys 1st Company onto the base. After a bleep test and an assault course for warm-up, we encountered the enemy insurgents from Royston.

You get the idea, army reference after army reference after army reference. Wing Commander Catchpole with 2 goals, Defense Unit Specialists Chandler and Cawcutt with crucial interceptions in tight spots, Weapons Specialist Peoples with an incisive drag-flick to open the firing – playing on an army base is like shooting fish in a barrel for a sports writer on the lookout for cheap gags.

In truth, the base was more Butlins than Kabal. An inviting dry ski slope populated with scores of local children overlooked the pitch, the sun shone brightly, and an opposition content to play nice hockey, full of neat patterns and potential, but lacking the aggression or conviction up front to pose a serious threat. Even the umpires steered clear of creating any bad feelings or controversy, officiating fairly and consistently throughout.

2-0 up at half time, 5-0 at the end, this was a game blissfully devoid of the tribulations and tight spots in which we have found ourselves in recent weeks. We played composed passing hockey on the slick surface, growing in stature and playing more expansively with every goal we scored.  When things are going your way, short corners go in, and indeed we scored from a succession of routines. Mention must also go to Dave Catchpole, whose opening goal, a reverse stick bullet from the top of the D, was right out of the top drawer, albeit with the extended personal jubilation and celebrations that followed only too quick to remind everyone in the vicinity of the pitch of this fact.

With 2nd and 3rd both winning, our lead remains at 6 points. 7 points from the last 5 games will secure promotion, with a home game against table-dwelling Fight Club-auditioning Luton Town on Saturday presenting the opportunity to take another big step towards achieving this goal. 2pm push back at Warners, all support welcome.
