OSHC meet Tess, the England mascot

An overcast Saturday morning saw 17 of our braver club members meet at the clubhouse for the three hour journey to Nottingham to watch England ladies play in the Samsung Ladies Championship. Such was the success of the England Ladies in the earlier rounds that a win would have secured them a place in the final. Although they came back from two behind against New Zealand they couldn’t find the extra goal to guarantee their position. This made for an exciting second ladies match with China taking on Argentina. If China won or drew England would have gone through to the final. Despite all the England fans rooting for them China were beaten 4-3 by Argentina.

Our third match of the day was in the Men’s Four Nation invitation competition with New Zealand taking on Japan. This was just the prelude to the highlight of the day, watching our very own Jonty Clarke playing for Great Britain against Germany. A very close run game went to extra time where Germany won with a golden goal.

An excellent day out was had by all and the very tired group arrived back at the club at 1 o’clock the following morning.

On Saturday 17th July 2010 England Ladies are taking part in the World Champions Trophy in Nottingham. Also playing that day is the Great Britain mens team. The full schedule is shown below

10:00 - Netherlands v Germany - Women’s Champions Trophy 2010
12:30 - England v New Zealand - Women’s Champions Trophy 2010
15:00 - China v Argentina - Women’s Champions Trophy 2010
17:30 - 3rd v 4th - Men’s Four Nations
20:00 - Final - Men’s Four Nations
The men’s teams taking part are Great Britain, Germany, New Zealand and Japan.

I have come up with the following prices

£38.00 for concessions (children under 18 and those in full time education)

£45.00 for adults

This will include travel to and from Nottingham and entry to the tournament for the day ie to watch all the matches, except the first one, as we would need to leave around 7 o’clock in the morning!. Meals, drinks, souvenirs or anything else are not included.

Whilst I understand that this is not cheap, to watch four international games in any other sport would be considerably more expensive. I have not booked anything as yet, but the coach would go from the club, leaving at around 9 o’clock to get us there in time for the second game of the day between England ladies and New Zealand ladies. I would not expect us to return to the club until around 1 o’clock the following morning.

This offer is open to anyone associated with the club, not just to members and players and I would positively encourage parents grandparents, siblings and friends to come along. We may be able to take responsibility for some unaccompanied children from the club but this is subject to enough adult helpers going along.

I am not asking for any commitment at the moment just expressions of interest so that I can gauge whether it is a viable idea. Please let me know if you are interested with likely numbers of adults and children by Sunday 14th March. Feel free to email me or speak to me if you have any questions. This is an unique opportunity to watch 4 matches of international hockey at a good price and should be an excellent day out.

Essex Hockey are looking for umpires for the Essex Academy Assessment Day on 10th January 2010. It is held at Redbridge Sports Centre, and is part of the process for selecting players to represent the county in various competitions.

The day is divided into 4 sessions: 9.30am to 11.30am, 11.30am to 1.30pm,1.30pm to 3.30pm and 3.30pm to 5 30pm. It is a good opportunity for levelone candidatesto practice outside of the pressure of league hockey!

There might also be some coaching available which is really useful, particularly if you are looking to get a practical assessment soon.

If you are interested in helping out please can you let Mick Pullin know: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
